Strategic requirements planning for large projects

The timely merging of resource requirements and resource availability is a challenge for any manager during times of acute resource scarcity and demographic change.

Large projects (involving a shutdown or an investment) in the process industry are increasingly planned according to the availability of resources. The availability of the contracting partners becomes the strategic decision of the management. In Germany's 11 refineries alone, two to three large-scale shutdowns take place annually. In addition, there are many large-scale and partial shutdowns in the chemical industry and in power plants. For reasons of competition, there must be no coordination between the operators. Increasingly, the contracting partners are international actors. To map and manage this complex structure, support can be provided by IT tools that have been specially preconfigured to these requirements — but only if the data, process and resource quality are right. This responsibility cannot fall to the project manager alone — but help is on hand from a qualified TAR process controller.

Our Focus

Operators of technical systems must invest in specific cycles in order to maintain their systems, expand them and adapt them to the market requirements. To this end, operators carry out a series of technical projects, CAPEX (investment projects) and OPEX projects (operation, maintenance and shutdown projects). The duration of these projects can be anywhere from a few days up to several years depending on the scope and complexity involved. Due to their size, their technical requirements and the availability of the necessary technical systems, such projects present a significant risk to the operator — and typically involve the interaction of many different stakeholders, often comprising an entire network (made up of operators, contractors and suppliers). The application, calculation, planning, implementation, monitoring, feedback and controlling involved in such projects present a challenge for every operator.
