“With QlikView we were able to significantly optimize the process from data acquisition and preparation to reporting, both in terms of time and quality.”
Jens Kersten, Head of Operations Organization, THÜSAC Personenverkehrsgesellschaft mbH
With its 192 employees and 16 apprentices, THÜSAC Personennahverkehrsgesellschaft mbH operates public transport in the areas of Thuringia and Saxony, regional traffic in the rural districts of Altenburger Land and Leipzig as well as in three neighboring districts, urban transport in Altenburg, Borna and Schmölln, the school traffic, rental bus traffic, and their own repair shop. In 2014, 7.9 million passengers were transported 4.6 million route kilometers with 94 THÜSAC-owned and 43 rented buses.
As a public transport company, THÜSAC is obliged to report to the local authorities and licensing authorities at district and state level. “We are active in two German federal states. This means a double report obligation,” adds Jens Kersten, Head of Business Organization, THÜSAC Personennahverkehrsgesellschaft mbH. “So far, we have done our evaluations using Excel, Access, and an open-source solution which involved a lot of manual work and a corresponding error rate. We wanted to become more efficient and flexible with the analysis of scheduling and sales data by introducing a user-friendly BI solution.”
Based on a “hot tip” from a BI expert, Jens Kersten looked at the visual analytics platform QlikView at the international trade fair InnoTrans presented by software solution provider COSMO CONSULT and quickly came to the conclusion, “that’s it!”
QlikView offers a patented, memory-based associative technology that enables users to quickly, dynamically and interactively analyze data. A graphical and interactive interface ensures ease of use.
“The decisive factor for us was the interaction between the BI software and the competence of the partner,” explained the Head of the Operation Organization. “We liked QlikView because of its ease of use, simple connection to any data source, and attractive price-performance ratio. What finally convinced us, is that we have found a development and implementation partner in COSMO CONSULT who knows our industry and our challenges and can turn them into reliable solutions in a targeted manner.” The Qlik Elite Solution Provider and Qlik Expertise Partner provide a BI solution suite with the cc|bi public transport solutions that offers preconfigured dashboards to cover the essential analysis requirements of transport companies. Accordingly, the solution can be productively implemented for the customer. A computerized operations control system (RBL) from TSystems, a ticket sales system from Krauth, financial accounting software, and Excel were connected as data sources.
THÜSAC was able to launch a sales dashboard for the analysis of sales according to various criteria after just five days. “The preconfigured applications form a very good basis, which we were then able to easily expand to meet our individual requirements,” confirmed Kersten. “For example, we have different operating areas in Saxony and Thuringia, which requires separated calculations. Accordingly, we needed a sales analysis by zone. Implementation in QlikView was easy and took little time.”
A dashboard for driving data analysis was implemented as the second project step. The dashboards are used by the management as well as employees from operation and maintenance, controlling, finance, IT, marketing and sales. The timetable office uses QlikView to check whether the timetable fits or needs to be modified, for example with regard to stopping and waiting times. “In order to be able to apply for compensatory payments, for example for the school transport in accordance with the regulations contained in § 45 of the Passenger Transport Act, we have to report certain key figures,” explains the head of the Operation Organization. “With QlikView we can call up all the necessary key figures directly and up-to-date.”
In the future, THÜSAC would like to analyze the consumption of vehicles by linking the fueling data to QlikView. A dashboard for the line income calculation is planned as well.
