In the 18^th and 19^th century, Vitis was one of the most important markets of the Waldviertel in Austria. The cattle and horse market were of interregional importance. Also, the so-called "Kneiperlmarkt" in which servants, mainly from neighboring Bohemia, were mediated until the First World War. Vitis was also a center of the textile publication industry during this period.

The economic structures have rapidly changed in recent decades, especially in the market town of Vitis. Jobs increased in the business and services sector.
