Waste Management without a Weighbridge is like a Garbage Truck without an Engine

Johannes Neumüller05/22/2017

Garbage trucks transport waste between two places. Without an engine, this would be impossible. When we consider the entire waste industry, the weighbridge – or scale to put it in simpler terms – is of similar importance. The scale is the key to materials management.

Materials management is defined as the “process chain of all activities when acquiring, handling, processing as well as storing and distributing materials and goods”. To make a long story short: everything materials-related in a company. In waste management, materials are only rarely countable units such as palettes. This shows how important the scale is.

The scale is the central data source

In terms of ERP solutions for the waste management industry, the scale is the central data source. The place where the most important information such as weight or quality is recorded. Time is short whenever important resources are concerned. The same applies to scales in waste management. This means we cannot take too much for time weighing activities. We thus have two goals at the scale: recording the data correctly and weighing quickly.

These goals might seem simple enough at first glance. The daily applications are what makes them complex. In order not to turn complex into confusing, contemporary solutions must feature significant intelligence. Since, how do you process weighing of compact parcels on a car trailer the same way as several containers on road trains? What happens if there is an old freezer on the truck in addition to the waste mentioned? Can we keep track of all incoming and outgoing deliveries? How do we control traffic on our company premises? Many questions, each requiring its own solution.

The central role of the scale perfectly clear

For COSMO CONSULT, the central role of the scale for the industry is perfectly clear. Therefore, the scale is one of the core elements of our industry solution for the waste management industry. It establishes a connection between the weighing process and orders in the ERP system. Tailored specifically to the waste management industry, the solutions comprises i.a. functionalities such as direct integration of the weigh bridge, weighing individual pieces to entire truck loads, incoming, outgoing and collection, follow-up, tour and control weighing or support for quality-based reductions (e.g. when moist, dirty). In addition to the weighing process itself, the solution also supports, for example, handling ad hoc customers and deliveries, new classifications of materials, entry controls or the management of refused incoming material.
