Case study: Optimizing the Forklift control system

In the case of the software provider specializing in intralogistics, it was necessary to improve the previously available algorithm used for the distribution of transportation orders to the individual resources on the basis of specific key figures. Based on the priorities and general conditions, it was necessary to distribute the transportation tasks to the individual resources in such a way that all critical parameters were met and an efficient use of the resources was ensured.

After conducting a workshop, it was first necessary to define the requirements for the later solution and the necessary interfaces, especially when it comes to the execution of the SAP system. Therefore, an artificial penalty system was developed, which evaluates the allocation of orders. Late deliveries were sanctioned and thus were largely prevented. Because of the tight timeframe, the algorithm was developed in the C ++ programming language. Therefore, a heuristic technique was first formulated, which was subsequently improved using the k opt heuristic approach. Using DLL and Java, it was also possible to fully integrate the solution into the existing system architecture.

During the run, the existing transportation orders in the pool are continuously optimized and distributed accordingly. This ensures that the various resources do not follow a rigid, predefined plan, but always respond to current changes and requests.

Key figures such as service level or resource utilization show a significant improvement in the order distribution as a result of optimization. Thanks to the ongoing routines, order changes result in a significantly lower impact on the overall system.
